Google Tech Equity Collective Rising Innovators: Ep 13: Wait! There’s Cybersecurity Too

Hey there! When I left off with this blog series, I lamented about the over-emphasis of highlighting only software engineering jobs with the Black Genius Academy arm of the Google Tech Equity Collective program. Well, now the training (at least in step 2) is going into cybersecurity. I am very happy about this much needed detour.

Why?

Cybersecurity is based on anomaly detection which is based on statistics. There are 3 standard deviations in normal distribution. 1 standard deviation covers 68% of the distribution. 2 standard deviations cover 95.5% of the distribution. 3 standard deviations cover 99.7%. Anomaly detection covers the difference between the 2nd and 3rd deviation (In between 95.5% through 99.7%).

In this archival episode, I talk about the importance of math in technology. Math is the reason why we’ve come up with binary (0 and 1). Furthermore, with companies suffering ransomware threats and cyberattacks on a daily basis, there is a very real need for qualified cybersecurity people.
